PRINCETON, N.J. –
Courtney Kenny set a Loyola University Maryland record in the 300 meters on Saturday as the Greyhounds opened their indoor track and field season at Princeton University's New Year Invitational.
Kenny and
Molly Smith both ran faster than the previous best in the 300, 43.35, set last season by
Rachel Koller. Kenny's time of 41.78 edged Smith's 42.05 as the pair were sixth and 10
th, respectively in the event.
Smith was a winner in the 400 meters at the meet, posting the 10
th-best time in school history, 59.08, to lead a one-two-three-four finish for Loyola.
Senna Ohlsson took second in 59.64, while Kenny (60.74) and
MaryEllen Woods (60.94) were close behind. In addition to sweeping the top-four in the event, Loyola had nine of the top-12 finishers.
Gabrielle Silvestri was sixth in 62.14, while
Megan Daviero took ninth (62.93).
Eve Schoenberg finished 11
th in 63.24, and
Carly Spinnler took 12
th (63.26).
"We were really pleased with what we saw on the track today," said Head Coach
Amy Horst. "As a group, the women showed their experience competing. Kicking off with two of our athletes racing under a school-record time in the 300 was inspiring for the team. It will be a long stretch before we compete again in January, and from there Patriot League Championships will come quickly. We had a good day today to keep that focus and momentum through finals and Christmas break."
Devon Terwilliger led Loyola win the 200 meters, running 27.46 to place ninth and edge teammate
Katherine Schramm's time of 27.70. Schramm was the Greyhounds' top finisher meters, taking 12
th in 8.18, earlier in the day.
Kayleigh Caggiano and
Courtney Wallace placed second and third, respectively, in the mile, running 5:16.58 and 5:37.96.
Gillian Blackwood opened her collegiate career with a seventh-place finish in the final of the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 9.39.
Grayce Heinemann was another freshman who had the Greyhounds' top time in an event, running 2:20.00 to finish fourth in the 800 meters.
Audrey O'Neill was seventh (2:21.75), and
Kate Ragone took 10
th (2:26.62) in the event.
Three Loyola quartets raced in the 4x400 meters, with the top team of Terwilliger, Ohlsson, Woods and
Christa Sidoti taking third in 4:03.77.
Jacqueline Kohaut, Schoenberg, Spinnler and Silvestri were sixth in 4:16.97, and Heinemann, Caggiano, O'Neill and Wallace placed eighth (4:22.51).
