Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer plays the second and third of four-straight home games this week at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • The Greyhounds first take on Utah State University in a 6 p.m. match on Friday, August 31. Loyola will also welcome its first-year students to the game that evening.
  • UMBC ventures across Baltimore on Sunday, September 2, for a 7 p.m. start at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • The 2018 season is Loyola's ninth at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • After starting the season with three games on the road, the Saint Francis game on August 26 marked the first of four in a row at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • Naomi Meiburger is in her fifth season as the head coach at Loyola. She is joined on the sidelines by third-year assistants Kevin Dempsey and Morgan Ruhl and volunteer assistant coach Lacey Phillips.
  • The Greyhounds' 2018 women's soccer roster includes 19 returners with previous experience at Loyola, a transfer and eight freshmen.

Looking Back

  • Mia Sardella bent a corner kick over the heads of defense and inside the far post on Sunday afternoon, providing the eventual game-winner in the 17th minute to lift Loyola to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Saint Francis (Pa.).
  • Sardella struck a corner that swung right-to-left and over the outstretched hands of Saint Francis goalkeeper Julian Hernan. It bounced at the goal line and inside the far post at 16:08, giving Loyola a 1-0 cushion over the two-time defending Northeast Conference Champions and NCAA College Cup participants.
  • The Greyhounds had a season-high 14 shots and held Saint Francis to only three. The Red Flash were averaging 2.7 goals entering the game.

Series History

  • Loyola will play Utah State for the first time in series history. It will also be the Greyhounds' first-ever game against a school from the State of Utah.
  • The last time Loyola played a team from the current Mountain West Conference was in 2008 when it tied San Diego State, 3-3, in at the VIllanova Classic.
  • Loyola and UMBC will face each other for the 15th time on Sunday when they take the field
  • Last year, the Greyhounds extended their record to 8-3-3 against the Retrievers with a 1-0 double-overtime victory over the Retrievers. Mary Theresa Corcoran drilled home a Julianna Cabrera corner kick less than two minutes into the second overtime period, scoring her second game-winner in extra time in three games. Cabrera slipped a pass deep on the left side to Jourdan Ziff, and Ziff's aggressive play earned the Greyhounds the corner kick. Cabrera's line-drive service dipped inside the far corner of the six, and Corcoran came rushing on to drive in the header for the win.
  • Both teams took eight shots in the game, but the Greyhounds' attacking presence kept consistent pressure on the Retrievers' defense, earning Loyola eight corners to UMBC's five.

About The Aggies & Retrievers

  • Utah State and UMBC will both come to Ridley Athletic Complex this weekend looking for their first wins of the 2018 season.
  • The Aggies opened with a pair of games on the season's first weekend, falling 2-0 to Sam Houston State and 2-1 to Minnesota. Those games, on August 16 and 19, however are their only two of the season. They will face Loyola after a 12-day layoff.
  • Sara Noel scored Utah State's goal against the Gophers off an Ashley Cardozo assist. Grace McGuire and Marren Nielsen have split time in goal with McGuire taking 135 of the 180 minutes. They have allowed two goals each.
  • UMBC will play its fifth game of the year when it faces Loyola. The Retrievers have lost to Robert Morris (1-0), La Salle (5-0), St. Francis (Pa.) (4-0) and American (2-1). Christina Corbi has the Retrievers' lone goal. Leah Roth has seen 315 minutes in goal with a 3.14 goals-against average and .607 saves percentage.

Rahe Of (Sumer) Sunshine

  • Loyola senior goalkeeper Sumer Rahe recorded the sixth clean sheet of her career on Sunday against St. Francis (Pa.) and has been outstanding in goal for the Greyhounds this season.
  • Rahe has a 1.00 goals-against average and has saved 81.8 percent of shots on goal she has faced, one of those goals coming on a Seton Hall penalty kick.
  • Over the last two season (2017 and thus far in 2018) Rahe has played all but 40 minutes in goal for the Greyhounds.

Fancy First One

  • Mia Sardella's first career goal was SportsCenter worthy last Sunday against St. Francis (Pa.). The senior midfielder served a corner kick and bent it over the top of the St. Francis defense inside the far post for a goal. It would turn out to be the eventual game-winner.
  • Sardella has played in 45 career games, and the goal came on the 24th shot of her career. She also has four career assists, all from her sophomore season of 2016.

Coaches Corner

  • "We know (Utah State) will be a strong team, and we will need to be at the top of our play to compete. It will be a great challenge for our team and another measuring stick for this program on the national level. We are excited to be at home for the next three games as we look to develop a level of sophistication for our team heading into September." - Head Coach Naomi Meiburger
