BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's soccer concludes the regular season with a Friday night matchup at Patriot League-leading Navy. The Mids have clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament, while the Greyhounds can qualify for postseason play with a win or a draw on Friday.

Last Time Out
  • Colgate's Lexi Mitchell headed in the game-winning goal with 2:33 remaining in double-overtime, as Loyola dropped a 1-0 decision on Senior Day in its regular season home finale at Ridley Athletic Complex.
  • Paige Sim made a season-high eight stops in goal to keep the Greyhounds in the contest throughout.
  • Shots were 21-16 in favor of Colgate, while Loyola had a 10-8 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Loyola suffered its first home defeat since Sept. 6 after going 3-0-1 in its previous four contests at Ridley.
  • The Greyhounds went to overtime tied 0-0 for a fourth time in their past five Patriot League games. Two of those contests have ended in scoreless draws, with Loyola dropping the other two by 1-0 scorelines.

Series History

  • Navy leads 8-3-2 in a series which dates back to 1993.
  • The Mids have a 4-1-2 edge since Loyola joined the Patriot League prior to the 2013 season, with the lone Greyhound victory a 2-1 double overtime triumph at Ridley on Sept. 24, 2016. Current senior Casey McKenzie scored the GWG for Loyola in the 106th minute.
  • Navy earned a 2-1 victory in last year's meeting. Kaleigh Gallagher scored her first collegiate goal in the 85th minute for Loyola, who led 8-7 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

About the Mids

  • Navy (15-2-1, 6-1-1) secured the top spot in the Patriot League standings with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Boston University on Saturday.
  • Eight of Navy's last nine games have been decided by 1-0 scorelines, with the lone exception a 1-1 draw with Lafayette on Oct. 2.
  • The Mids have won four-straight games since suffering their lone Patriot League defeat, a 1-0 setback at Holy Cross on Oct. 12.
  • Navy ranks seventh in Division I in goals-against average (0.39), surrendering a total of seven goals in 18 games (two goals in eight Patriot League games).
  • Fourteen different players have at least one goal. Baseley McClaskey (4 G, 5 A) leads the offense with 13 points.
Playoff Scenarios
  • Loyola is ranked third in the Patriot League standings with 12 points entering the final weekend of the regular season, two back of second-place Army and just three points ahead of Colgate in eighth. The top six teams qualify for postseason play.
  • The simplest way for Loyola to qualify for the playoffs is through a win or draw at Navy. Either of those results would additionally clinch a top-four spot in the conference.
  • The Greyhounds would also get in if two teams out of Lafayette (vs. Boston U), Lehigh (vs. American) and Colgate (vs. Army) fail to win or through a combination of two losses from the group of Lafayette, Lehigh, Colgate, Bucknell and Holy Cross. Bucknell and Holy Cross, who both trail Loyola by one point, play at Holy Cross at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Stifling Defense
  • Loyola has allowed one goal or fewer in nine-straight games, with a record of 4-2-3 during that stretch.
  • The Greyhounds have surrendered just five goals in their first eight matchups against Patriot League opponents, recording clean sheets in three of those contests.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Paige Sim, who was honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week on Monday, leads the Patriot League and ranks 25th nationally in save percentage (.860). She is also second in the conference and 28th nationally in goals-against average (0.62).
  • In four Patriot League road games, Loyola is 1-1-2 with a 0.25 goals-against average.
Mallia Back at the Academy
  • Joe Mallia was hired for his second stint as Loyola's head women's soccer coach in December 2018 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant at Navy.
  • The Mids went 19-6-2 against Patriot League opponents during his three years on the coaching staff, advancing to the Patriot League championship game in 2017.
  • Prior to rejoining Loyola, Mallia was also an assistant at UCLA (2005-06), and Tennessee (2012-15), and he served as head coach at Loyola Marymount from 2007-11.
Quick Notes
  • The Greyhounds are looking for their first playoff appearance since 2015. They have reached the conference tournament two times (2014-15) since joining the Patriot League in 2013.
  • Senior midfielder Hannah Hoefs (7 G, 3 A) continues to lead the Patriot League in both goals and points (17). She has factored in 10 of Loyola's 16 goals this season.
  • Sarah Bayer (4 G, 2 A) is tied for fourth in the conference in goals, and she is sixth among Patriot League performers in points per game (0.62).
  • The Greyhounds are 5-0 this season when scoring multiple goals
  • Six Loyola players (Hoefs, Bayer, Beth Eversman, Claire Beath, Maddie Hart, Julia Gray) have started each of the team's first 16 games.
