Golf Third After Windy First Day At Hamptons Intercollegiate

Brandon Berry had the Greyhounds' best round of the day with a 74 in the opening 18.
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Winds that were consistently over 15 miles per hour and gusting above 30 kept scores high during the first two rounds of the 2019 Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Golf Club, but Loyola University Maryland withstood the conditions to finish the day in third place as a team.
 
The conditions yielded just three rounds of par or better, and the links course played to an average of 79.97 shots per round through 36 holes at the first-year event hosted by the Greyhounds.
 
Oregon State leads the team event after shooting 23-over 599 on Monday, and the Beavers have two players among the top three thus far including leader Shawn Lu who is 1-over through 36.
 
Richmond is second, 14 shots behind Oregon State, while Loyola is third six strokes behind the Spiders. The Greyhounds are 10 shots clear of fourth-place Princeton, and the Tigers are followed in order by Cornell, Seton Hall, Yale, Penn and Brown.
 
Brandon Berry and Preston Ball had the Greyhounds' best two-round scores of the day, finishing Monday tied for seventh at 8-over par 152. Berry was tied for second after the first round when he shot 2-over 74 in the morning to stand a pair behind Lu's opening 72.
 
Ball, who is competing as an individual, checked in with a 5-over 77 in the morning and a 3-over 75 in the afternoon to match Berry's 152.
 
Carlo Pizzano finished Monday two strokes back of Ball and Berry at 10-over 154 to tie for 11th. Pizzano finished his second round with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to close in on the top-10.
 
Turner Foster, playing on his native Long Island, is tied for 19th after at 13-over 157 after rounds of 78 and 79 Monday. Trent Geritz, who is competing in his first collegiate event as an individual, carded an 82 in the morning and a 78 in the afternoon to tie for 26th after the day.
 
Evan Brown shot 77 in the second round to tie for 32nd after two rounds, while the Greyhounds' final individual, Steven Weingroff, is tied for 52nd.
 
Play will resume with the third and final round on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:40 a.m.
