GOODYEAR, Ariz. –
Evan Brown birdied four back-nine holes, including three in a row at one point, to finish Saturday's first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate tied for second-place individually.
The Greyhounds combined to shoot 2-over 290 at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club and are tied fourth after 18 holes. Loyola Marymount leads the tournament after combining to shoot 4-under 284. Drake is second two shots back, Marshall trails by five, and Loyola is tied with Seton Hall for fourth.
Brown finished the day, which was marred by early wind and rain, at 4-under 68, doing his damage on the back nine. The junior birdied his second hole, a par-5, before giving the stroke back with a bogey on the sixth. He made the turn at even-par and dropped into red numbers with a birdie on the par-5 11
th.
He then played the 13
th, 14
th and 15
th holes at 3-under, scoring on a pair of par fours and a par-5. Brown finished his day with three pars on the last three holes to finish his day a stroke behind Delaware's Roberto Nieves who leads the tournament at 5-under.
Carlo Pizzano was the Greyhounds' second-best scorer on Saturday, shooting even-par 72 with three birdies and an equal number of bogeys. He is tied for 20
th after 18 holes.
Turner Foster and
Nick Mejia, who is playing as an individual, are both tied for 34
that 2-over 74. Foster sported an eagle on the 525-yard, par-5 14
th hole, but he also had three bogeys on the back nine. Mejia recovered from a triple-bogey seven on the day's opening hole to shoot 1-under 35 on the back nine.
Matt Malits had two birdies on the back nine and finished at 4-over 76, tying for 66
th, while
Brandon Berry was tied for 90
th at 6-over 78.
The tournament resumes at 7:45 a.m. (MST) on Sunday.
