The Matchup

  • Two of the top three teams in the Patriot League standings will face off at Ridley on Wednesday, as Loyola hosts Bucknell in its second-to-last home game of the regular season.
  • The Greyhounds are currently two points back of both Bucknell and Boston University for first place with four conference games remaining.

Last Time Out

  • Kaleigh Gallagher scored the game's only goal 10:43 into the first half, and Paige Sim made three saves while recording her second-straight clean sheet during a 1-0 victory for Loyola at Holy Cross on Saturday.
  • The Greyhounds earned their second road win of the season and handed the Crusaders (1-11-1, 0-4-1 PL) a fourth-consecutive defeat.
  • Gallagher's strike was a memorable one, as her shot towards goal from just above the out-of-bounds line eluded Holy Cross goalkeeper Olivia Dubin and landed inside the left post.
  • Chloe Kuminkoski assisted on the goal, picking up her first collegiate point in the process.
  • Sim secured the victory with a big stop in the 85th minute, jumping high to tip a curling Holy Cross effort just above the crossbar.
  • The Greyhounds ended the afternoon with a 13-8 edge in shots, while Holy Cross earned six of the game's seven corner kicks.

Offensive Leaders

  • Sarah Mirr (2 G, 2 A) and Ada Clare Tempert (3 G) are tied for the team lead with six points through the season's first 13 games. Mirr had the lone goal for Loyola in a 1-1 draw at Army on Sept. 25, while two of Tempert's three goals have been game winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate).
  • Baylee DeSmit (2 G, 1 A) and Kelly Hutton (2 G, 1 A) both follow with five points apiece, while Kaleigh Gallagher (2 G) rounds out a group of five Greyhounds with multiple goals on the year. DeSmit also leads the team with 28 shots (16 SOG).
  • Seventeen different Greyhounds have at least one point this season. Elizabeth Gallagher became Loyola's eighth different goal scorer during Loyola's 2-0 win over Lafayette on Oct. 2.

Series History

  • Bucknell leads 6-4-2 in a series which dates back to Loyola's first season as a program in 1992.
  • The Bison hold a 6-1-1 edge since Loyola joined the Patriot League, but the Greyhounds picked up their first win in the series since 2007 last spring with a 1-0 home triumph on March 13.
  • Loyola, playing with only five field substitutes available in the contest, earned all three points on a 73rd minute game-winning strike by Ada Clare Tempert. The Bison did not register a single shot on goal in the defeat.
  • Bucknell and Loyola played to a scoreless draw in the previous meeting on Oct. 23, 2019, with Paige Sim making six saves to secure the clean sheet in goal.

Scouting Bucknell

  • The Bison (7-6-1, 4-1-0 PL) have shutout Holy Cross (2-0) and Lafayette (1-0) in their previous two Patriot League contests. Their lone conference defeat this season was a 3-0 setback at Colgate on Sept. 25.
  • Bucknell is 2-5-0 overall on the road this season compared to a 5-1-1 mark at home.
  • Jr. F Rylee Donaldson (8 G, 1 A) leads the Patriot League in both goals and points (17), while Fr. M Teresa Deda is the conference leader in assists (7).
  • As a team, the Bison rank second in the Patriot League in goals per game (1.50) and they lead the conference in shots (15.57) and corner kicks (6.57) per game.
  • So. GK Jenna Hall has played 1235 out of a possible 1280 minutes in goal. She has a 1.60 GAA and .747 save percentage, and ranks second in the conference with four shutouts.
Quick Notes Entering Wednesday
  • A victory over Bucknell would give the Greyhounds four wins in Patriot League play for a second time in program history (they went 4-4-1 during a 2015 season which included a run to the conference semifinals).
  • Six players (Gillian Borton, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim) have started each of the first 13 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Sim has held Patriot League opponents to one goal or fewer in 21 of 22 career starts against conference schools.
  • Sim (GK of the Week) and Kaleigh Gallagher (Offensive Player of the Week) both earned weekly Patriot League awards on Monday. Sim now has four awards this season and eight overall as a Greyhound, while Gallagher was recognized for a second time in her collegiate career.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 12 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 4-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also undefeated (5-0-1) when leading at halftime this fall. They are 7-0-2 overall in their last eight games when holding an advantage at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim has played 1199 out of a possible 1210 minutes this season, and she has totaled 6+ saves in seven of her 13 appearances.
  • For the year, Sim is 6-5-2 with a 1.05 goals-against average, a .806 save percentage and a conference-high five shutouts. Taking away Loyola's defeats to ACC leaders Clemson and Wake Forest, she is 6-3-2 with a 0.61 GAA and .868 save percentage.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 15-9-8 with a 0.72 GAA, a .838 save percentage and 13 shutouts in 31 starts.

Worth Noting

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 25 points (10 G, 5 A) in 52 collegiate appearances.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 14 of 18 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 8-4-6 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Smart Hounds
  • Loyola finished the 2021 spring semester with an impressive 3.604 team GPA. A total of 17 Greyhounds recorded a semester GPA above 3.60, with Gillian Borton, Kaleigh Gallagher, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr and Jenna Nall all posting perfect 4.0 GPA's.
  • Sarah Bayer (biology/speech pathology interdisciplinary major, 3.95 GPA) and Paige Sim (biology major, 3.94 GPA) were both Academic All-Patriot League selections, with Bayer later becoming the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2012.
