The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer begins its quest for the program's first Patriot League Championship this weekend, as the third-seeded Greyhounds host No. 6 Army West Point in a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday afternoon.
  • The Greyhounds have advanced to the semifinals in each of the last two conference tournaments. Army's last playoff appearance came in 2019, when the Black Knights fell 2-1 to Navy in the championship game.

Last Time Out

  • Sarah Bayer scored the game's only goal late in the first half, and Paige Sim made four saves to secure her Patriot League-leading seventh shutout during a 1-0 victory for Loyola at American to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday.
  • Jess Korman set up Bayer's strike with 46 seconds remaining before the intermission, picking up her team-leading fourth assist in the process.
  • Bayer now has three goals this season, and she has scored in each of Loyola's last three games against American.
  • Sim made her biggest save of the afternoon in the 18th minute, diving to her right to prevent a strong header by Cailynn Adelman from reaching the back of the net.

Patriot League Tournament History

  • Loyola is making its third-straight Patriot League tournament appearance since the return of head coach Joe Mallia in 2019. The Greyhounds have appeared in five Patriot League tournaments overall since joining the conference in 2013.
  • Navy has ended Loyola's season in each of the last two semifinals, advancing 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in 2019 and topping the Greyhounds by a 1-0 final during the 2021 spring campaign.
  • Loyola picked up its first Patriot League tournament victory during the 2019 quarterfinals, as a 108th minute goal by Hannah Hoefs finished off a 1-0 double overtime win over Lafayette at Ridley.
  • The Greyhounds were previously a member of the MAAC from 1992-2012, winning 10 conference titles and advancing to eight NCAA tournaments during that span.

Offensive Leaders

  • Loyola has had a variety of offensive contributors throughout the season, with 17 different Greyhounds recording at least one point on the year.
  • Baylee DeSmit (4 G, 1 A), Sarah Bayer (3 G, 1 A) and Sarah Mirr (2 G, 3 A), are the current top point scorers. Ada Clare Tempert (3 G) follows with six points, while Kelly Hutton has contributed two goals and an assist.
  • Two of Tempert's three goals have been game winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate). DeSmit continues to lead the team with 34 shots (20 SOG).
  • Kaleigh Gallagher (2 G) rounds out a group of six Greyhounds with multiple goals.

Series History

  • Army leads 4-2-2 in a series which began when Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013.
  • The home team has never lost in the series, with Army going 4-0-1 at West Point and Loyola holding a 2-0-1 edge during games played in Baltimore.
  • All six victories in the series have been decided by one goal, with five of those contests ending in 1-0 scorelines.
  • The teams played to a 1-1 draw during this year's regular season meeting at West Point on Sept. 25. Sarah Mirr opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while Trinity Garay equalized for Army 5:44 into the second half. Paige Sim matched a season-high with seven saves to secure a point for Loyola.
  • Loyola's last victory in the series was a 1-0 triumph at Ridley Athletic Complex on Sept. 29, 2018.

Scouting Army West Point

  • The Black Knights (6-8-3, 3-4-2 PL) finished tied with Colgate for sixth place in the Patriot League regular season standings, but advanced to the postseason through a 2-1 victory over the Raiders on Oct. 9.
  • Fourteen different players have at least one point on the year, with Sr. F Trinity Garay (5 G, 1 A) and So. F Jasmine Talley (3 G, 3 A) leading the offense.
  • Fr. GK Sage Strohman has started 13 of 17 games, including all nine conference matchups, in goal. She is 4-6-3 with a 1.24 GAA and .746 save percentage.
  • Army is 1-5-2 on the road this season compared to a 5-3-1 mark at home.
  • The Black Knights had the highest winning percentage among Patriot League schools during the spring 2021 season at 4-1 (2-1 North), but missed out on the conference tournament due to division tiebreakers.
Quick Notes Entering the Weekend
  • Loyola's eight victories are the program's most since the 2012 team went 12-6-4 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. The Greyhounds' 18 points in Patriot League play were also their most since joining the conference.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 18 of 22 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 11-4-7 during that stretch.
  • Each of Loyola's last four victories, and seven of eight overall on the year, have come via shutout.
  • Six players (Gillian Borton, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim) have started all 17 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Sim has held Patriot League opponents to one goal or fewer in 25 of 26 career starts against conference schools.
  • Five Loyola players combined for eight weekly Patriot League awards this season. Sim was a four-time Goalkeeper of the Week, while Baylee DeSmit (Midfielder of the Week), Kaleigh Gallagher (Offensive POW), Elizabeth Gallagher (Rookie of the Week) and MK Barnes (Defensive POW) were also recognized individually.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 12 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 4-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are 8-0-2 when scoring first and 6-0-1 when leading at halftime this fall. They are 8-0-2 overall in their last 10 games when leading at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim has played 1599 out of a possible 1610 minutes this season, and she has totaled 5+ saves in nine of her 17 appearances. She leads the Patriot League in goals-against average (0.90), save percentage (.824) and shutouts (7) this fall.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 17-9-10 with a 0.69 GAA, a .844 save percentage and 15 shutouts in 35 starts.

Worth Noting

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 29 points (12 G, 5 A) in 56 collegiate appearances.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Looking Ahead
  • A victory would send Loyola to a third-straight Patriot League semifinal matchup at No. 2 Navy on Thursday. The Black Knights would travel to No. 1 Boston University if they advance.
