Quick Hits About the 'Hounds

  • Loyola begins its 2021 spring season with a 2 p.m. Monday afternoon home matchup against Colgate. The game was scheduled after both teams' original opponents (Loyola vs. Navy, Colgate vs. Holy Cross) were sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • Loyola is coming off a 2019 season in which it placed fourth in the Patriot League standings, earning a home game at Ridley Athletic Complex in its first postseason appearance since 2015.
  • Jr. F Sarah Bayer is Loyola's top returning scorer, as she totaled 10 points (4 G, 2 A) while starting all 19 games in 2019.
  • So. GK Paige Sim (6-2-5, 0.54 GAA, .877 save pct., five shutouts) led the Patriot League in both save pct. (11th in Division I) and GAA (15th in DI) in 2019.
  • Joe Mallia is in his second season (ninth overall) as Loyola's head coach after previously leading the program from 1998-2004. The all-time winningest coach in team history, he is 94-52-13 overall at Loyola. Mallia won conference championships in five of seven seasons during his first tenure as head coach.

Fan Policy

  • Monday's game versus Colgate will be closed to all spectators due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety protocols.

Last Season

  • Loyola finished with a record of 7-7-5 (3-2-4 PL) in 2019, with the seven victories the program's most since 2012.
  • A double-OT winner from Hannah Hoefs secured a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in the PL quarterfinals. The Greyhounds then earned a 1-1 draw with top-seeded Navy in the semis, with the Mids ultimately advancing to the final 4-3 on PK's.
  • The Greyhounds went 5-2-5 over the season's final 12 games, allowing only seven goals during that stretch.
  • Hoefs was named PL Midfielder of the Year. Hoefs and Sarah Bayer were named first team All-PL, while Julia Gray and Paige Sim earned second team status and Kaleigh Gallagher landed on the third team.
  • Hoefs, who led the PL in goals (9) and points (21) was also a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-East region honoree, as she became Loyola's first all-region selection since 2015.

Series History

  • Colgate leads 6-1-1 in a series which began in 2013.
  • Both results for Loyola were earned in 2015. The Greyhounds advanced 4-3 on PK's after a scoreless draw in the opening round of the Patriot League tournament, and they topped the Raiders by a 3-2 final in the regular season.
  • Colgate edged out a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Ridley on Oct. 26 last season, as Lexi Mitchell headed in a corner with 2:33 left in extra time. Paige Sim made a season-high eight saves in the setback.
About the Raiders
  • Colgate began its spring season last weekend, earning a 2-1 double overtime victory at defending Patriot League champions Navy. The Mids led 19-10 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks. On that second corner, though, Hannah Pinkus was able to head in the game-winner with 17 seconds remaining in extra time.
  • Back-to-back 1-0 victories over Loyola and Army West Point allowed Colgate (5-9-4, 3-3-3 PL) to sneak into last year's Patriot League tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Raiders fell by a 4-0 final in their rematch with Army in the opening round.
  • Colgate was ranked No. 3 in this year's PL Preaseason Poll, with Sr. M Sage DiGiulio representing the Raiders on the Preseason All-League team.
  • Colgate was limited to 13 goals (0.72 per game) in its 17 contests last season.

Preseason Rankings and Awards

  • Loyola projected to finish fifth in the Patriot League standings this spring after earning the program's first Patriot League tournament victory in 2019.
  • Sarah Bayer and Julia Gray were both named Preseason All-Patriot League performers, as the Greyhounds were one of four schools to have multiple selections on the 12-member Preseason All-PL Team.
  • Bayer provided game-winning goals in victories over Seton Hall and American, and scored Loyola's lone strike in a 1-1 conference draw with Holy Cross last season. She has 19 points (8 G, 3 A) in her first 36 collegiate appearances.
  • Gray also started every game in 2019, as she anchored a defense which ranked second in the Patriot League in both goals allowed (5) and goals-against average (0.56) during conference play.
Spring Schedule Adjustments
  • Consistent with the prioritization of health and safety during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the six-game spring soccer schedule features reductions in travel and overnight stays.
  • The Patriot League is split into two five-team divisions, with Loyola grouped in the South with American, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy.
  • The top two teams in each division advance to the PL tournament, with semifinal games set for April 14 and the championship scheduled for April 17.
More Quick Notes
  • Paige Sim allowed one goal or fewer in all 14 appearances during her debut season in goal. She was Loyola's first All-Patriot League goalkeeper since 2014.
  • Ten freshmen are included on the 28-player roster for this season, and the Greyhounds also have three sophomores (MK Barnes, Alex Searing, Ada Clare Tempert) who will look to make their collegiate debuts after redshirting in 2019.
  • Senior defenders Julia Gray and Nicole Rivas were selected as team captains for the 2020-21 season.
  • Four Loyola players combined for eight Patriot League weekly awards in 2019, with Hannah Hoefs (3x), Sim (3x), Sarah Bayer and Kaleigh Gallagher all receiving recognition.
  • Loyola has six returners who started double-digit games in 2019, including Bayer, Gray, Gallagher, Sim, Claire Beath and Gillian Borton.
  • The Greyhounds were 5-0 in 2019 when scoring multiple goals.
  • Loyola's last NCAA tournament appearance came in 2012 (12-6-4, MAAC tournament champions).
