Quick Hits About the 'Hounds

  • A playoff spot is on the line for Friday's regular season finale between Loyola women's soccer and Lehigh, as the two teams square off in Bethlehem, Pa., beginning at 6 p.m.
  • The Greyhounds will secure the No. 2 seed in the South division with a win or a draw, while the Mountain Hawks need a victory to clinch the No. 2 seed. Navy is locked into the No. 1 position.
  • Loyola has held opponents to one goal or fewer in 16-consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season.
  • Joe Mallia is in his second season (ninth overall) as Loyola's head coach after previously leading the program from 1998-2004. The all-time winningest coach in team history, he is 97-53-13 overall at Loyola. Mallia won conference championships in five of seven seasons during his first tenure as head coach.

Last Time Out

  • Sarah Bayer scored the game's only goal with 21:13 remaining in regulation, sending Loyola to a key 1-0 victory at American on Saturday.
  • The Greyhounds held the Eagles (0-4 PL, 0-3 South) without a shot on goal over the final 53 minutes of the contest.
  • Bayer's goal came off a corner from Gillian Borton on the right side. Borton nearly scored on her own, as her cross bounced off goalkeeper Ryleigh Brown's hands and settled on the goal line before Bayer was able to tap the ball into the back of the net.
  • Paige Sim made two saves to secure her seven shutout in 16 collegiate starts in goal. She is now 3-1 on the year with a .714 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average.
  • The Greyhounds improved to 11-3-4 lifetime against American, including a 5-1-2 edge since joining the Patriot League.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 5-3-2 in a series which dates back to 1995.
  • Lehigh holds a 3-2-2 edge since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013, though Loyola has won each of the past two meetings.
  • After picking up their first win over the Mountain Hawks since 2006 two years ago, the Greyhounds made it back-to-back victories in the Patriot League opener last season, as a 70th minute free kick from Hannah Hoefs was the only scoring during a 1-0 road win on Sept. 21, 2019.
  • Paige Sim made five saves in goal to record a clean sheet in her first collegiate start.
About the Mountain Hawks
  • Lehigh (1-2-2 PL, 1-1-1 South) has gone 0-2-2 since opening the spring with a 1-0 victory over American on March 6. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 2-1 setback at South division leaders Navy last Saturday night.
  • Lehigh outshot the Mids by a 10-9 margin, and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to recover from a 2-0 halftime deficit.
  • The Mountain Hawks were ranked eighth out of 10 schools in the Patriot League preseason poll after going 5-8-5 (3-5-1 PL) back in 2019.

Patriot League Tournament Format

  • The Patriot League is split into two five-team divisions this spring, with Loyola grouped in the South with American, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy.
  • The top two teams in each division advance to the PL tournament, with semifinal games set for April 14 and the championship scheduled for April 17.
  • Division seeding will be determined based on points earned against division opponents (three points for a win, one for a tie). Only the first game played against a division opponent counts towards the team standings.
  • Tiebreaker information is available on the Patriot League website.
  • Navy will host either Loyola or Lehigh in a semifinal next Wednesday. The remaining team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship game.
Quick Notes
  • Sarah Bayer was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after her GWG over the weekend. Bayer, who now has 22 points (9 G, 4 A) in 40 games at Loyola, received her third-career weekly award from the conference.
  • Ada Clare Tempert has scored two of Loyola's four goals on the year, including a 73rd minute game-winner in the Greyhounds' 1-0 win over Bucknell on March 13. She was named Patriot League Offensive POW on March 9 after scoring once and delivering a cross deflected in for an own goal during Loyola's 2-1 victory over Colgate.
  • Paige Sim led the Patriot League in both save pct. (.877, 11th in Division I) and GAA (0.54, 15th) in 2019. She was Loyola's first All-Patriot League goalkeeper since 2014.
  • Sim and Claire Beath are the only two Greyhounds to play all 364 minutes in the first three contests.
  • Sarah Bayer and Julia Gray were both Preseason All-Patriot League selections.
  • Gray and Nicole Rivas were selected as team captains for the 2020-21 season.
Last Season
  • Loyola finished with a record of 7-7-5 (3-2-4 PL) in 2019, with the seven victories the program's most since 2012. The Greyhounds went 5-2-5 over the season's final 12 games, allowing only seven goals during that stretch.
  • A double-OT winner from Hannah Hoefs secured a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in the PL quarterfinals, the program's first tournament win since joining the conference in 2013.
  • Hoefs was honored as the PL Midfielder of the Year. Hoefs and Sarah Bayer were named first team All-PL, while Julia Gray and Paige Sim earned second team status and Kaleigh Gallagher landed on the third team.
  • Hoefs, who led the PL in goals (9) and points (21), was also a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-East region honoree, as she became Loyola's first all-region selection since 2015.
