Sarah Mirr converted a penalty kick with 9:18 remaining in regulation, but it was not enough for Loyola University Maryland in a 2-1 setback at Princeton on Friday.
Gabi Juarez had a first-half PK for the Tigers (1-0-0), while Kamryn Loustau scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 59th minute.
Paige Sim finished with a season-high seven stops in goal for the Greyhounds (1-2-0).
Mirr's goal was the first of her collegiate career, as she beat Princeton goalkeeper Grace Barbara with a low shot into the left corner following a hand ball in the box. The senior midfielder now has a team-high three points on the year after adding an assist in last week's 1-0 win over Marist.
The teams combined for three shots off the crossbar in the opening 17 minutes. Princeton had the first two attempts, and
Baylee DeSmit had a long-range effort rattle off the bar 16:50 into the contest.
Juarez's opener came with 12:34 remaining before halftime. The Tigers had a 13-2 edge in shots heading into the intermission, with Sim making five first-half stops to keep Loyola within one.
After an even start to the second half, Princeton doubled its advantage off a corner kick.
Olivia Quaranta made a team save to momentarily keep the score at 1-0, but Loustau was there to put home the rebound for the home side.
Julia Gray made a clean sliding tackle at the top of the box to prevent a breakaway for the Tigers in the 77th minute, and she cleared the line in front after the ensuing corner kick shot from Jen Estes initially hit of fthe post.
Jess Korman then added another team save for the Greyhounds in the final minute, blocking a shot by Estes with 27 seconds remaining. Loyola was held without a shot attempt over the final nine minutes after Mirr's PK.
Princeton was playing its first competitive game since November 9, 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this was the first meeting between the two teams since 2006.
Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex on Sunday, hosting Iona in a non-conference matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
