BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland accounted for two of the Patriot League's five weekly awards for women's soccer released on Monday, as juniors
MK Barnes and
Paige Sim were both recognized following a 1-1 week for the Greyhounds.
Barnes was honored as Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career, while Sim received her fourth-career Goalkeeper of the Week award. Both contributed to a defensive effort which resulted in a shutout victory at Howard on Thursday and kept visiting Delaware off the scoreboard for over 90 minutes over the weekend.
Barnes played all 90 minutes on the backline at Howard, preserving the clean sheet after recording a team save with 4:19 remaining in regulation. She also picked up her first assist at Loyola in the first half, helping set up
Ada Clare Tempert's game-winning goal in the 11th minute. Barnes has appeared in six games for the Greyhounds this season, earning starts in four of those contests.
Sim made six saves at Howard while registering her third shutout of the season and 11th overall in 26 collegiate starts. Four of those stops came in the second half, as she helped Loyola hold on for the win after being reduced to 10 players. Sim then extended her scoreless streak to a career-long 326+ minutes on Sunday before Delaware edged out a 1-0 victory in overtime. An All-Patriot League performer in each of her first two seasons, Sim leads the conference in shutouts this season and ranks second in save percentage (.796).
Loyola remains at home for its next two games, beginning with its Patriot League opener against Colgate at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
