EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Loyola University Maryland sophomore
James Rico is tied for 10
th after rounds of 72 and 70 on the first day of the Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Club.
Rico led the Greyhounds to ninth place after the first 36 holes as the Greyhounds had rounds of 292 and 297 to sit at 13-over for the tournament that they are hosting for the fourth time.
Alabama leads the team race at 19-under, thanks in large part to the individual leader, reigning U.S. Amateur Champion Nick Dunlap who is 15-under through two rounds after shooting a 12-under 60 in the second.
The Crimson Tide lead two-time defending Hamptons Intercollegiate champion Virginia by four strokes, while UCLA is at 14-under, and Ohio State is 10-under.
Two groups were on the course playing their final holes of the second round when it was suspended due to darkness. Play will resume at 7:30 a.m. (EDT) on Tuesday.
Rico had back-to-back double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes of his first round Monday, but he bounced back with a birdie on the ninth to turn at 3-over. He then birdied all three of the back nine's par fives to finish the opening 18 at even-par 72.
He had three birdies and a bogey amongst 15 pars in the second round to finish his day at 2-under 142.
Mike Crowley is one shot back of Rico at 1-under. Crowley birdied the 13
th hole in the first round to get to 1-under, and the then parred the last five holes for a team-best 1-under 71 in the morning.
The senior birdied three of his last four holes in the second round to finish with an even-par 72.
Gustavo Rangel made five-straight birdies to close his morning round at 1-over, while
Jackson Roman and
Turner Foster both shot 4-over in that round.
Roman came back to shoot 1-over 73 in the second round and is tied for 42
nd after 36 holes. Rangel is 59
th, and Foster 65
th through two rounds.
Playing as an individual,
Connor McGarrity shot 1-over 73 in the second round and is 48
th overall.
