GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Joe Hayburn and
Lily Mead both took bronze medals in the 100-yard backstrokes, as did the men's 200 freestyle relay, on Friday night, placing third in the events at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships.
Mead finished third in the women's 100 backstroke while setting a school record in the event for the seventh time.
She swam 53.11 seconds in the morning preliminaries to break the school mark of 53.22 seconds that she set last month at the H2ounds Invitational.
Mead then came back to race to a time of 52.86 in the finals for the third-place finish. She now has the three fastest times in the Patriot League this season, and her finals time ranks in the top 60 of NCAA Division I swims in the event this year.
Hayburn was up next in the men's 100 backstroke, and he came out with a bronze medal finish, as well. The sophomore swam 47.05 in the final to take third.
Hayburn was part of another bronze-medal finish on Friday night as he joined
Michael Gozdan,
Brennan Coyle and his brother,
Patrick Hayburn, to finish third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:20.04).
Gozdan reached an 'A' final individually, as well, taking eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.67.
Michael Venit placed second in the 'C' final of the event (54.53), and
Elias Corn was 26
th in the preliminaries (55.41).
JD Moyer was eighth in the men's 'B' final of the 100 backstroke in 49.23, and
Henry Mueller finished 31
st (49.67) in the preliminaries.
Hans van Lierop finished fourth in the 'C' final fo the 100 butterfly, swimming 48.80, while
Cameron Shinnick was sixth in 48.89, and
Harry Hearn finished eighth in 48.78.
Patrick Hayburn finished 28
th in the prelims of the event (49.09), and Moyer was 31
st (49.31).
