BALTIMORE –
Baylee DeSmit scored her fifth goal of the season with 14 seconds left in the first half, a goal that looked like it would stand up as the winner for Loyola University Maryland women's soccer on Sunday, but visiting Hofstra scored with 30 seconds to go in regulation and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
A Hofstra foul approximately 38 yards from the goal setup a Loyola free kick late in the first half. DeSmit sent a ball that kept its pace all the way to the goal line. Pride goalkeeper Mackenzie Sullivan got her hands on the shot, but it deflected off and into the net to give Loyola a 1-0 lead.
Loyola came out looking to add to its lead in the second half, but Sullivan saved a DeSmit attempt, and a
Michaela Virgin shot in the 57
th minute went just wide right, and it remained 1-0.
Just under two minutes later,
Brigid Mulholland kept the Pride off the scoreboard with a save on Dagny Run Petursdottir's attempt.
Hofstra then had its best chance yet to even the score, but a Millie Davies chip from inside the six went off the cross bar in the 64
th minute.
Mulholland made her final of four saves in the 68
th minute to keep the Loyola in front where it would remain until the final minute.
Petursdottir made a run on the left side of the box and drew a foul that would give Hofstra a free kick from inside 20 yards.
Aimee Hodgson sent a low, curving ball into the six where Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir flicked it into the net for the tying goal.
Loyola will be back at Ridley Athletic Complex on Thursday, September 12, for a 7 p.m. game against Wagner.
