LEWISBURG, Pa. — Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the ECAC Championships on Friday with strong scoring performances that positioned both squads among the leaders after the first full day of competition at Bucknell University.
The Loyola women totaled 110 points through 12 events and stood in fourth place overall at the end of the opening day. The Greyhounds men are second through one day with 169 points.
Loyola's women began the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as
Kelly Bruen,
Virginia Walsh,
Gabby Jones and
Haley Robinson touched first in 1:33.62.
Individually, Robinson followed with a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a time of 23.18. Jones added points with a 10th-place showing in 24.06. In the 500-yard freestyle,
Adrianna Caponiti placed 10th with a time of 5:04.29, while
Elsie Bredbenner finished 15th in 5:10.75.
Loyola also placed three swimmers in the 200-yard individual medley.
Riley McGerald led the group with a 10th-place finish in 2:06.42, followed by
Keira McGrath in 13th at 2:08.85 and
Makenna O'Brien in 16th at 2:10.67.
Annie Dockx took fifth in the women's 1-meter diving with a score of 224.10 points, while Simone Abassi finished eighth with 179.30.
On the men's side, the Greyhounds opened the finals session with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as
Tyler Knurek,
Jack Hathaway,
Dylan Covington and
Riley Coyle combined for a time of 1:21.86.
The men delivered a deep and productive showing in the 500-yard freestyle, highlighted by
Hayden Bartz's runner-up finish in 4:27.16.
Matthew Hughes placed third in 4:28.80, Pierre Leroy finished fifth in 4:31.07 and
Thomas Cechini added points with a seventh-place swim in 4:32.06. Loyola continued to score with
Peter Weinstein (12th, 4:41.78),
Sam Voss (13th, 4:42.15),
Timmy King (14th, 4:42.45) and
Chase Garcia (15th, 4:43.71).
In the 200-yard individual medley, Hathaway placed seventh in 1:49.89, while
Elias Corn finished 15th in 1:54.19. Covington and Coyle contributed additional points in the 50-yard freestyle, placing 14th (21.03) and 15th (21.06), respectively.
The day concluded with the 400-yard medley relay, where
Joe Hayburn, Hathaway, Knurek and Cechini combined for a second-place finish in 3:12.60.
Hayburn matched his school-record time of 44.81 seconds to lead off the relay in the 100 backstroke.
Competition at the ECAC Championships continues Saturday with a full slate of preliminaries and finals.
