Men's Cross Country Team Captures Gettysburg Invitational

Oct. 14, 2006

Gettysburg, Pa. - The Loyola men's cross country team had three individuals earn Top-10 finishes en route to a team title at the 2006 Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Loyola men won the race with 50 points while the women place third in their race with 113 total points.

"I can't even say how excited I am for this team," says Loyola assistant coach Brett Harvey, who occompanied the team to Gettysburg, Pa. "Our top three guys have been there all year and once again came through."

It was sophomore Chris Heibell who led Saturday's effort with a runner-up finish and a time of 25:44. Junior Gian Caccia placed fourth in 26:10 and junior Brian Parker was right behind him in sixth with a time of 26:13. Loyola's fourth scorer, freshman Terry Moran, ran a 26:54 for the 'Hounds.

"Terry is having a great freshman season," added Harvey. "Every time we think he's done all he can his first year, he proves us wrong - running under 27 minutes is great for any freshman."

Junior Andrew Rice was the Greyhounds fifth scorer in 27:04 while senior Brendan O'Kane came back from injury to post an impressive 27:09.

On the women's side, the Greyhounds ran a good team race with sophomore Maureen Wynne leading the way with her 12th-place showing and time of 23:40. Freshman Alex Beaver, however, was the story of the day, coming back from an injury suffered in the first race of the season to finish the Gettysburg course in 24:01.

"Alex ran a very impressive race," says Harvey. "After falling on a bridge and hurting her back at Mount St. Mary's, she has barely ran and was able to race in 24 minutes. We've very encouraged from what we saw today."

Senior Colleen Depman placed 22nd in 24:08 while senior Sarah Spencer placed 29th in 24:25. Sophomore Alexa Previti ran well in her first race of the season, finishing in 24:36.

The Greyhounds are idle next weekend in preperation for the MAAC Championships on Friday, October 27.
