UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Competing in the prestigious Penn State National Open, Loyola University Maryland junior
Kayleigh Caggiano led the Greyhounds women's cross country team by finishing 177
th in a meet that included 28 teams and 289 runners on Friday morning.
Caggiano covered the 6,000-meter Blue-White course in a time of 22:54 to lead the Greyhounds. It marked the second consecutive meet that she led Loyola.
Senior
Christina Daniels followed closely behind as she placed 182
nd with a time of 23:03. Sophomore
Tara Ryan ran the race in a time of 23:34, finishing 189
th in the field.
Freshman
Grayce Heinemann took 192
nd place with a time of 23:42 while junior
Audrey O'Neill earned a 193
rd place finish with a time of 23:43. Senior
Mary Sutton finished in 195
th place with a time of 24:10, edging out junior
Kelly Williamson, who took 196
th place with a time of 24:33.
The host Nittany Lions, ranked 19
th in the nation coming into the meet, won the championship with 62 points as freshman Julia Paternain won individual honors.
Michigan State, ranked 14
th in the nation, was runner-up and Georgia Tech, ranked 26
th, was third. 26
th-ranked Utah and 27
th-ranked Princeton were also among the 28 teams that competed in the meet.
Loyola's men's team, which did not compete at the Penn State Meet, and other members of the women's program will participate in the Lafayette Invitational on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
Both the men's and women's teams will return to action on October 27 when they compete in the Patriot League Meet at Bucknell University.
