ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Heather Merrifield and
Courtney Kenny set school records on Saturday as the Loyola University Maryland women's track and field team opened its 2019 outdoor slate at the Navy Spring Invitational.
The Greyhounds finished third out of nine teams with 75 points, edging the University of Maryland by one.
Merrifield knocked almost two seconds off the school 400-meter hurdles record she initially set in 2017, running 61.58 to finish second on Saturday, improving her previous record of 63.20; her new record also is an ECAC Championships qualifying time.
Kenny also bettered a school record that she had previously set, finishing fifth in the 200 meters with a wind-legal time of 25.27 seconds. She the school mark last year with a time of 25.34.
Rachel Koller took sixth in the event in 25.93, the No. 5 time in school history, while
Maria Jaeckel was ninth in 26.32.
Molly Smith was fifth in the 400 meters on Saturday, opening her outdoor performances with a time of 57.99, good for 10
th-best in school outdoor history.
Courtney Wallace won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:37.48, the No. 10 time in school history and the fastest by a Loyola runner in the event since 2013.
Three Greyhounds finshed in the top-10 of the 800 meters, led by
Carly Spinnler's fourth in 2:20.66.
Tara Ryan was seventh in 2:24.71, while
Kate Ragone claimed ninth in 2:25.16.
Kayleigh Caggiano raced to a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters, crossing the line in 4:41.32.
Gillian Blackwood and
Kathleen Shepherd were fifth (15.84) and eighth (15.96), respectively in the 100-meter hurdles, while
Katherine Schramm and
Danielle Spano took 10
th (12.75) and 13
th (13.00) in the 100 meters. Schramm's time is a tied for fifth-fastest in school outdoor history.
Eve Schoenberg and
Devon Terwilliger also had top-10 finishes in the 400-meter hurdles behind Merrifield. Schoenberg was seventh in 65.19, while Terwilliger ran 65.46 to finish a spot back.
The Greyhounds' team of Kenny,
Senna Ohlsson,
MaryEllen Woods and Jaeckel won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:02.38, while the group of Koller,
Gabrielle Silvestri, Schoenberg and
Molly Lahiff was fifth in 4:09.20.
Merrifield, Smith, Terwilliger and Spano were fourth in the 4x100-meter relay, running 49.73.
Several Greyhounds ran in the 5,000 meters, but dropped out at the 3,000-meter mark.
Christina Daniels led the way through 3,000 meters, running 10:35.80, while
Mary Sutton ran 10:48.28.
Members of the Loyola men's cross country team also competed at the meet Saturday with Nathan Galloway's third-place finish in the 5,000 meters leading the way; he ran 15:26.43 in the race.
Brandon Rossi took 20
th in the 800 meters in 2:02.27; Charles Dillon (20
th, 4:19.82) and Patrick Cropsey (21
st, 4:20.47) had back-to-back placings in the 1,500 meters.
The Greyhounds will be back in action next weekend when they head to Williamsburg, Virginia, for the Colonial Relays.
