WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Three Loyola University Maryland runners had top-10 performances to lead the Greyhounds women's track and field team Friday at the start of the Colonial Relays.
Heather Merrifield continued her excellent start to the season with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, running 61.84 to finish one-hundredth of a second behind the winner, Central Connecticut State's Sierra Nesmith. Merrifield's time is the second-best in school history, behind only her school-record performance of 61.58 from last Saturday.
Kayleigh Caggiano was seventh in the university heats of the 1,500 meters, clocking a time of 4:39.39 that is the ninth-fastest in school history.
MaryEllen Woods took fourth in the 800-meter university heats, running 2:15.94. Two other Greyhounds,
Carly Spinnler (19
th, 2:20.51) and
Kate Ragone (24
th, 2:22.16), also had top-25 finishes in the event.
Devon Terwilliger and
Eve Schoenberg followed Merrifield's pace in the 400 hurdles. Terwilliger was 16
th in 65.45, while Schoenberg finished 23
rd in 66.53.
Christina Daniels finished 13
th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37.34.64.
Mary Sutton was 37
th in the championship 5,000-meter run in 18:17.19;
Kelly Williamson finished 17
th in the university 5,000-meter heats, running 18:56.41.
Courtney Kenny took 24
th in the 400 meters (59.21), and
Molly Smith was the team's top finisher in the 200 meters, taking 36
th in 26.49.
Gillian Blackwood led Loyola in the 100-meter hurdles (26
th, 16.05), while
Katherine Schramm had the Greyhounds' top finish in the 100 meters (42
nd, 13.11).
The Greyhounds will continue their competition on Saturday at the Relays.
