  • Loyola has held opponents to one goal or fewer in 15-consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season.
  • Joe Mallia is in his second season (ninth overall) as Loyola's head coach after previously leading the program from 1998-2004. The all-time winningest coach in team history, he is 96-53-13 overall at Loyola. Mallia won conference championships in five of seven seasons during his first tenure as head coach.

  • Caitlin Doran headed in a long free kick from Avery Fries 3:31 into the first overtime period, as Navy edged out a 1-0 victory over Loyola at Ridley Athletic Complex last Saturday.
  • A majority of the game was played in the midfield, with the sides combining for just five shots on goal overall. Loyola had six of the game's eight shot attempts in the first half, but Navy had a 7-3 advantage the rest of the way.
  • Paige Sim made two saves in goal, while Sarah Bayer, Alex Searing and Kaleigh Gallagher all had two shots to lead the Loyola offense.
  • Loyola seniors Vanessa Alessi, Claire Beath, Sabrina Daglish, Taylor DiMarco, Julia Gray and Nicole Rivas were all recognized in a pregame ceremony prior to their final regular season home game of the spring.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 10-3-4 in a series which dates back to the program's first season in 1992.
  • The Greyhounds have a 4-1-2 edge since joining the Patriot League, with the lone defeat a 2-1 setback in 2017.
  • Loyola posted a 3-1 victory during the most-recent meeting on Oct. 2, 2019.
  • All three goals came in the opening half hour, with Hannah Hoefs, Sarah Bayer and an own goal accounting for the offense. American held an 11-7 advantage in shots.
  • Loyola's three goals were its most in a game last season.
About the Eagles
  • American is 0-3 overall this spring, with the Eagles falling 5-0 to Army West Point on March 20 in addition to their two division setbacks.
  • The Eagles were ranked last in this year's Patriot League preseason poll after finishing with a record of 6-8-4 (1-4-4 PL) in 2019. The lone conference victory was a 1-0 triumph at Lehigh in their final game of the season.
  • American has 24 shots this spring, including seven on target, but is still searching for its first goal of the 2021 season.

Patriot League Tournament Format

  • The Patriot League is split into two five-team divisions this spring, with Loyola grouped in the South with American, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy.
  • The top two teams in each division advance to the PL tournament, with semifinal games set for April 14 and the championship scheduled for April 17.
  • Division seeding will be determined based on points earned against division opponents (three points for a win, one for a tie). Only the first game played against a division opponent counts towards the team standings.
  • Tiebreaker information is available on the Patriot League website.
  • Loyola (3 pts, 1-1-0) is currently one point behind Lehigh (1-0-1) and Bucknell (1-2-1) for second place in the division standings. Navy (2-0) is in first place with six points.
  • Each division winner will host the second-place team within its division in the semifinal round. The remaining team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship game.
Quick Notes
  • Ada Clare Tempert has scored two of Loyola's three goals on the year. The other goal, an own goal which secured Loyola's 2-1 win over Colgate on March 8, came off a Tempert cross. The 2019 Gatorade MD Girls Soccer Player of the Year was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on March 9.
  • Paige Sim led the Patriot League in both save pct. (.877, 11th in Division I) and GAA (0.54, 15th) in 2019. She was Loyola's first All-Patriot League goalkeeper since 2014.
  • Sim and Claire Beath are the only two Greyhounds to play all 273 minutes in the first three contests.
  • Sarah Bayer has 20 points (8 G, 4 A) in 39 appearances after recording an assist in the season opener. She and Julia Gray were both Preseason All-Patriot League selections.
  • Gray and Nicole Rivas were selected as team captains for the 2020-21 season.
Last Season
  • Loyola finished with a record of 7-7-5 (3-2-4 PL) in 2019, with the seven victories the program's most since 2012. The Greyhounds went 5-2-5 over the season's final 12 games, allowing only seven goals during that stretch.
  • A double-OT winner from Hannah Hoefs secured a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in the PL quarterfinals, the program's first tournament win since joining the conference in 2013.
  • Hoefs was honored as the PL Midfielder of the Year. Hoefs and Sarah Bayer were named first team All-PL, while Julia Gray and Paige Sim earned second team status and Kaleigh Gallagher landed on the third team.
  • Hoefs, who led the PL in goals (9) and points (21), was also a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-East region honoree, as she became Loyola's first all-region selection since 2015.
