Swimming & Diving Competes Against LSU, Navy, George Mason

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for 61 individual top-10 finishes on Friday evening as the Greyhounds swam at the U.S. Naval Academy against the host Midshipmen, LSU and George Mason.
 
The Greyhounds beat George Mason on both the men's (220-79) and women's (201-99) sides, but LSU (men, 214-85; women, 243-67) and Navy (men, 193-106; women, 182.5-117.5) had dual-meet wins against Loyola.
 
Relay Strengths
  • LSU won all four relays on Friday, but the Greyhounds took second in close races in the medleys and were third in both of the free relays.
  • The women's 200 medley relay team of Lily Mead, Avery Stimmel, Haley Robinson and Charley Tulio was less than three-tenths of a second back of the winning Tigers, swimming 1:41.97 to LSU's 1:41.69.
  • Loyola's men beat Navy's top 200 medley by almost three seconds with Joe Hayburn, Brennan Coyle, Patrick Hayburn and Caleb Kelly finishing second in 1:27.59. The Greyhounds' 'B' entry in the event – JD Moyer, Zach Eisenmann, Harry Hearn and Liam Schindler – also beat the Midshipmen with a time of 1:30.25.
  • The Greyhounds women took third in the 400 free relay with Stimmel, Faye Moser, Robinson and Tulio clocking 3:30.66, while the men's grouping of Patrick Hayburn, Coyle, Kelly and Joe Hayburn were also third in 3:00.81.
Five Top Threes  
  • Five Loyola swimmers took top three finishes in races during the event with Kelly's second-place in the men's 50 freestyle leading the way. He touched the wall in 20.08 seconds for the silver in the race.
  • Michael Gozdan flashed a time of 55.19 in the men's 100 breaststroke for third, and Luke Dwyer clocked 1:50.02 in the men's 200 butterfly for a third-place finish.
  • Charley Tulio was third in the women's 50 freestyle in 23.58, while Eisenmann was third in the men's 200 breaststorke in 2:04.30.
Men's Breaststroke Depth
  • The Greyhounds men showed excellent depth in both breaststroke races on Friday putting four in the top-10 in both the 100- and 200-yard distances of the stroke.
  • Gozdan had a third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 (2:05.46), while Eisenmann was fifth in the shorter (56.24) and third in the longer distance.
  • Michael Venit was sixth in both races (56.67, 2:06.88), and Elias Corn was 10th and ninth (58.46, 2:09.20).
Fast In The Free
  • Tulio was one of the Greyhounds to place in the top three of an event on Friday, doing so in the 50 freestyle by edging her teammate, Haley Robinson.
  • Robinson was fourth in 23.79, and Moser was also in the top 10, swimming 24.45 for 10th.
  • In the 100 freestyle, Moser was fifth on the women's side in 52.02, while Stimmel took ninth (52.92).
  • Kelly finished fourth for the men (44.91), whiel Coyle was seventh (45.78) and Schindler ninth (46.24).
Flying
  • Riley Fried earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 butterfly for the women with a race of 2:04.22, and Julia Mason took eighth in 2:07.29.
  • Dwyer led three Loyola men in the top eight of their eight of their 200 butterfly, coming in third while Harry Hearn was fifth (1:50.83), and Cameron Shinnick took eighth (1:52.36).
  • Michela Schultz and Katie Witkop were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the women's 200 buttefly with times of 57.45 and 57.48, while Patrick Hayburn (49.37), Shinnick (49.88) and Hearn (50.20) were fourth, eighth and ninth in the men's 100 butterfly.
Diving For Points
  • Cali Fasser scored in the top seven of both women's diving events, scoring 224.10 for fifth in the 1-meter event and 209.3 for seventh off the 3-meter board.
  • Thomas McCarthy and Sam Hersick traded places for the Loyola men with one outdoing the other on each board. McCarthy finished sixth with 251.5 points to Hersick's eight-place with 237.15 on the lower board, but Hersick was sixth (255.05) and McCarthy seventh (211.35) on the three-meter.
Going The Distance
  • CC Leoni led three Loyola women in the top seven of the 1,000 freestyle, swimming 10:34.24 for fourth place. Faith Karr took sixth in 10:36.84, and Ellie Davis was right behind in 10:41.79 for seventh.
  • Karr and Leoni then tied for 10th in the women's 500 meters with matching times of 5:12.20.
  • Four Loyola men were in the top nine of the 500 freestyle, led by Hayden Bartz in fifth (4:34.63). Matthew Hughes was seventh (4:38/22), Pierre LeRoy eighth (4:38.93) and Matt Gray ninth (4:39.42).
  • Bartz led the Greyhounds in the men's 1,000 freestyle with a fifth-place finish in 9:33.62, a spot ahead of Alex Plavoukos who was sixth in 9:38.66
Wrapping Up The Week
  • Loyola will be back in the pool on Saturday as the Greyhounds travel to Easton, Pennsylvania, for their third meet in five days. The Greyhounds will face host Lafayette College starting at 1 p.m.
