GREENSBORO, N.C. – A pair of Loyola University Maryland relay teams finished first and second in the 400 medley, and
Lily Mead earned a silver medal in the women's 200 individual medley, at the U.S. Open Championships on Thursday night.
Joe Hayburn,
Michael Gozdan,
Patrick Hayburn and
Brennan Coyle won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:12.80, edging the Greyhounds' grouping of
JD Moyer,
Michael Venit,
Cameron Shinnick and
Henry Mueller which finished second in 3:14.16.
Mead put down the second-fastest women's 200 individual medley time in school history – behind her own record – to claim second in the race. She swam 1:58.53, a NCAA 'B' Cut time and the fastest time in the Patriot League this year by nearly four seconds.
She also broke her school 50 freestyle record of 22.72 from last month with a swim of 22.63 seconds to take seventh in the finals. That time is also the best in the conference this season.
On Wednesday night,
two men's relays earned silver and bronze in the 200 medley relay.
Coyle was eighth in the 'C' final of the men's 50 freestyle, swimming 20.55 seconds after going 20.39 in the morning prelims.
Patrick Hayburn tied for 29
th in the prelims (20.51), while Gozdan and
Joe Hayburn tied for 35
th in 20.56 seconds, and
Hans van Lierop was 38
th (20.60).
Mueller took 26
th in the prelims of the men's 200 individual medley (1:50.97), while Gozdan was 28
th (1:51.16) and
Luke Dwyer took 40
th (1:53.03).
Alex Plavoukos finished 26
th in the prelims of the men's 500 freestyle (4:33.09), while
Hayden Bartz was one spot and less than a second behind in 4:33.81.
The meet will continue Friday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
