INDIANAPOLIS – Current Loyola University Maryland swimmers
Brennan Coyle and
Joe Hayburn, and a pair of Greyhounds alumni, Ben Cono '18 and
Lily Mead '24, competed at the Toyota National Championships last weekend.
Hayburn and Cono both qualified for 'A' finals in events, reaching the top finals in the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter breaststroke, respectively.
Cono was a four-time Patriot League Champion and the 2018 Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Meet for the Greyhounds before graduating in 2018. Now living and working in the San Francisco area, he is a member of The Olympic Club's training group.
He swam 27.79 in the 'A' final of the 50-meter breaststroke and finished eighth in the National Championships after reaching the top cut for the second year in a row in the event.
Hayburn dropped his long-course meters time and reached an 'A' final for the first time. He went 25.02 in the 50-meter backstroke to finish eighth and register the No. 10 time in the United States this year and the No. 37 mark in the world.
He also was sixth in the 'B' final of the 100-meter backstroke, swimming 54.07 seconds.
Mead, who will finish her master's degree at Loyola in December, reached the 'B' final of the women's 50-meter backstroke, taking eighth in the event in 28.38, and she was 31
st in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.37.
Coyle competed in his first national championships, swimming 29.39 for 42
nd in the 50-meter breaststroke, and 1:05.74 for 53
rd in the 100-meter breaststroke.
