BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland swimmers set four pool and four meet records on Friday as the Greyhounds ended the first day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational leading the men's and women's team races.
The Greyhounds men's team scored 1,046 points on the first day to lead the Retrievers (697) and Tigers (665) by more than 340 points each. Loyola's women took a lead of almost 150 points over second-place Towson, scoring 976 to the Tigers' 828, while UMBC is third with 620.
Both the men's and women's teams set pool and meet records in the 200 medley relays to open Friday night's session of finals, and
Lily Mead posted a pool record in the 50-yard backstroke as the leadoff leg on the women's side.
Alex Plavoukos knocked off a meet record in the men's 500 freestyle, Kelly swam a time of 19.81 seconds in the morning preliminaries for a meet-best in the 50 freestyle, and
Haley Robinson swam a time-trial in the 50 butterfly for a women's pool record in the event.
Mead,
Avery Stimmel, Robinson and
Charley Tulio combined to swim 1:40.40 in the women's 200 medley for a pool and meet standard, and the men's grouping of
Joe Hayburn,
Brennan Coyle,
Patrick Hayburn and
Caleb Kelly followed shortly thereafter with records of their own, swimming 1:25.67.
The men's time in the event is No. 9 in NCAA Division I through competitions of Friday night.
After
Michela Schultz (4:58.07) and
Riley Fried (5:00.80) finished third and fifth, respectively, to lead the Greyhounds women in the 500 freestyle, the men turned in an excellent showing in their version of the race, finishing first through fifth.
Plavoukos led the group with a time of 4:27.81 to break the meet record while winning the race.
Matthew Hughes was second in 4:31.28,
Hayden Bartz took third (4:32.03),
Jonah Goodman finished fourth (4:32.97) and
Kiernan Leary rounded out the group in fifth (4:35.55).
The men then went one-two in the 200 individual medley where
Luke Dwyer had the winning time of 1:50.10, just one-hundredth of a second better than
Henry Mueller's 1:50.11.
Michael Venit claimed fifth in 1:52.24.
Kate O'Brien swam 2:05.88 in the women's 200 individual medley for second place, and
Julia Mason was fifth in 2:08.25.
Loyola had the top times in both the women's and men's 50 freestyles with Robinson's 23.27 tying for first on the women's side, matching the time by UMBC's Ashley Gutshall, and Kelly touched the wall in 19.87 for the win in the men's race after setting the meet record of 19.81 in the morning.
Patrick Hayburn was close behind in 20.53 for second.
The women's 800 freestyle relay team – Mead, Fried, Schultz and Mason – claimed second in the 7:36.45, while the men's foursome –
Harry Hearn, Mueller,
Tyler Knurek and
Liam Schindler – went 6:41.77 to win their race.
At the conclusion of the morning session, Robinson swam a time trial in the 50 butterfly, racing only against the clock with no other competitors in the race, and she went 24.47 seconds for a pool record.
The meet will continue Saturday morning with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m., and the second session of finals will be that night at 6 o'clock.
