BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams increased their point leads on Saturday, combining for 10 wins on the second of three days at the Thomas Murphy Invitational.
Loyola's men have 2,452 points to lead UMBC (1,659), Towson (1,468) and one-day participant Mount St. Mary's (587). The Greyhounds women top the field with 2,289 points, while Towson (1,885), UMBC (1,459) and Mount St. Mary's (543) trail.
The Greyhounds won all four relays – the men's and women's 400 medley and 200 freestyle – competed on Saturday, as well as six of 12 individual events.
Loyola opened the evening final session with the women's 400 medley and set a meet record in victory.
Lily Mead,
Avery Stimmel,
Michela Schultz and
Fay Moser clocked a time of 3:43.35 for the win.
It would not be the only record Mead would set Saturday night.
She set a meet record in the 100 backstroke with her leadoff split in the relay, going 54.14 for the new mark. Later in the program, Mead swam 1:02.38 to win the 100 breaststroke in record time.
In all, Loyola knocked off five meet records and one pool best during the session.
The men's 200 freestyle relay with
Brennan Coyle,
Patrick Hayburn,
Joe Hayburn and
Caleb Kelly set a new Mangione Aquatic Center and Thomas Murphy Invitational records with a time of 1:20.43.
And,
Joe Hayburn took down the meet mark in the 100 backstroke with his 47.63 split to start off the medley relay.
The men's team had two one-two-three finishes during the night in individual events.
Luke Dwyer led a podium sweep in the 400 individual medley by winning in 3:56.53 with
Hayden Bartz (4:01.53) and
Kiernan Leary (4:01.62) taking second and third, respectively.
Joe Hayburn just missed setting the meet record in the 100 backstroke twice in one night when he finished first in the individual race in 47.78.
JD Moyer was second (48.92) and
Henry Mueller took third (48.94).
Loyola's women took first and second in a pair of individual races, while the men's team did so in one individual and one relay.
Riley Fried won the women's 400 individual medley by over two seconds with at time of 4:25.63, and
Kate O'Brien took second in 4:28.06.
Julia Mason finished fifth in the race in 4:35.34.
Kelly Bruen then came from being the No. 8 qualifier out of the morning preliminaries to winning the 100 backstroke in 56.74, just ahead of
Lauren Lane's 57.54; Moser took fifth in 57.80.
Michael Gozdan and Coyle went one-two in the men's 100 breaststroke with Gozdan touching the wall first in 54.03 and Coyle finishing second in 54.12;
Zach Eisenmann was fourth in 55.17.
The team of Gozdan,
Liam Schindler,
Hans van Lierop and Mueller finished second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:21.85) behind the meet-record time.
Schultz and Robinson took second and fourth, respectively, in the women's 100 butterfly, swimming 55.58 and 56.16, and Kelly (49.35),
Patrick Hayburn (49.39) and
Cameron Shinnick (49.57) were second, third and fifth in the men's version of the race.
Riley Zinger led the Loyola women in the 200 freestyle, finishing third in 1:53.97, while Schultz was fifth (1:54.48).
Alex Plavoukos recorded a second-place finish in the men's 200 freestyle (1:39.17),a nd
Tyler Knurek was fifth (1:40.74). Stimmel also had a top-five finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.78.
In diving,
Cali Fasser scored 225.55 points in the women's 3-meter event for a fifth-place finish, and
Sam Hersick took fifth in the men's 1-meter event with 271.4.
