BALTIMORE –
Lily Mead,
Avery Stimmel,
Haley Robinson and
Charley Tulio put their name on the Loyola University Maryland record board last February with a school 200 medley relay record, and the group broke their own standard Friday as the Greyhounds' men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened competition at the H2ounds Invitational.
Friday evening, the quartet swam 1:39.77 in the final to win the event and break their previous best of 1:40.32 from the Patriot League Championships.
Their time also set Mangione Aquatic Center and H2ounds Invitational record and was the winning relay by 4.01 seconds.
Overall, the Greyhounds won nine of 10 swimming events and both diving competitions on Friday, the first of three days of competition at the Invitational.
The men's 200 medley relay –
Joe Hayburn,
Brennan Coyle,
Patrick Hayburn and
Caleb Kelly – took down the pool and meet records and were victorious in their relay, swimming 1:25.15 to lead three Greyhounds teams that were first, second and third in the race.
Mead and Hayburn both set 50 backstroke pool records on the lead off legs of their relays.
Faith Karr led the field in the women's 500 freestyle, going sub-5:00 in 4:59.93 for the victory. Michaela Schultz, who swam a meet-record 4:59.25 in the morning's preliminary race, was third in 5:01.56, and
CC Leoni finished fifth in 5:03.63.
Alex Plavoukos had a personal-best and meet-record time (4:25.75) for the victory in the men's 500 freestyle with four other Greyhounds joining him in the event's top five.
Hayden Bartz was second (4:27.03), Pierre Leroy took fourth (4:32.29) and
Jonah Goodman went 4:34.05 for fifth place.
Riley Fried was the winner of the women's 200 individual medley by more than a second on Friday, touching the wall in 2:05.29 in front of
Kate O'Brien's second place 2:06.77.
Julia Mason (2:07.41) and
Laura Latham (2:07.95) were fourth and fifth, respectively, for Loyola.
Coyle set a meet record and led a one through four sweep in the men's 200 individual medley, winning in 1:47.77. His freshman classmate
Luke Dwyer came in second (1:48.92), while
Michael Venit (1:49.35) and
Owen Glaser (1:50.58) were fourth and fifth.
Stimmel, Robinson and Tulio were second (23.35), third (23.47) and fourth (23.51), respectively, in the women's 50 freestyle. In the morning's preliminaries, Mead swam an exhibition race and set a school, pool and meet record in 22.72 seconds.
Kelly was a half-second better than the rest of the field the men's 50 freestyle, going 19.75 for a meet reocrd to edge
Patrick Hayburn's 20.25.
Michael Gozdan was third in 20.35, and Hans Van Lierop finished fourth in 20.47.
Thomas McCarthy won the men's 1-meter diving event with a meet record 297.30 points, and
Sam Hersick took third in 279.15.
Cali Fasser led a one-two-three finish for the women in the 3-meter diving, scoring 239.10 points.
Kassidy Georgevich was second with 205.40, and Lily Jermain took fifth with 168.30.
Mead, Schultz, Fried and Gabrielle Jones wrapped up the night for the women's team with a win in the 800 freestyle relay, swimming a meet-record time of 7:31.17, while the men's group of
Patrick Hayburn, Plavoukos,
Tyler Knurek and
Henry Mueller went 6:38.32 for the win.
The meet will resume Saturday morning with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. Finals will commence that evening at 6 o'clock.
