MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams won a combined eight races on Sunday, but West Virginia University came away with a pair of victories,192.5-107.5 in the men's competition and 201–99 in the women's, at a dual meet.
On the men's side, Loyola opened with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as Joseph Hayburn, Michael Venit, Hans van Lierop and Brennan Coyle combined for a winning time of 1:27.24. Hayburn added individual wins in the 100 (47.06) and 200 (1:43.67) backstrokes, and Luke Dwyer claimed first place in the 200 butterfly in 1:47.86, while Liam Schindler won the 50 freestyle in 20.46.
Christine Datovech led the way with two individual wins for the Loyola women, taking first in the 100 freestyle in 51.14 and the 100 butterfly in 54.53. Haley Robinson added a win in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 23.26.
Cody Miles finished second in the 400 individual medley in 3:58.83 and fifth in the 1000 freestyle in 9:29.71. Kiernan Leary placed third in the 1000 freestyle in 9:28.08 and fifth in the 500 freestyle in 4:36.62. Thomas Cechini was third in the 200 freestyle in 1:39.71, followed by Davis in fourth at 1:40.10. Feldman and Coyle tied for fourth in the 100 freestyle with matching times of 45.22. JD Moyer placed third in the 100 backstroke in 48.55 and third in the 200 backstroke in 1:49.06. Ben Schlotterer was fourth in the 200 backstroke in 1:49.62 and fifth in the 100 backstroke in 50.22. Patrick Ciorna added a seventh-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 50.57 and sixth in the 200 backstroke in 1:52.36.
In breaststroke events, Venit was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 55.35 and fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.86. Jack Hathaway placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 56.27 and eighth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.57. Kaden Fatta was seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 57.02 and sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.65. Elias Corn finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 57.99 and seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.96.
In the 100 butterfly, Schindler was third in 49.08, Shinnick fourth in 49.18, van Lierop fifth in 49.48, and Tyler Knurek eighth in 51.25. Dwyer also placed fifth in the 400 individual medley in 4:03.55, while Floyd Conlin was seventh in 4:08.86 and Fatta eighth in 4:14.10. Loyola's top 400 freestyle relay team of Coyle, Colin Davis, Hayburn and Derek Feldman placed second in 2:59.43.
In diving, Thomas McCarthy placed third in the 1-meter finals with 269.18 points, followed by Sam Hersick in fifth with 250.95 and George Ligozio in sixth with 212.03.
On the women's side, Loyola's top 200 medley relay team of Kelly Bruen, Bryce Gold, Christine Datovech and Haley Robinson finished second in 1:41.76. Datovech won the 100 freestyle in 51.14 and the 100 butterfly in 54.53. Robinson won the 50 freestyle in 23.26, followed by Datovech in second at 23.32 and Davis in third at 23.97.
In the 1000 freestyle, Faith Karr placed fourth in 10:28.05, Ellie Davis was fifth in 10:34.13 and Adrianna Caponiti sixth in 10:42.57. Schultz was third in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.38 and third in the 500 freestyle in 5:04.02. Brien placed fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.85 and fifth in the 400 individual medley in 4:30.94. Lomonosov was sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.17 and third in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.02. Lane followed in fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.38, while Dwyer was fifth in 2:06.58 and Walsh sixth in 2:06.84.
Brandenburg placed third in the 100 backstroke in 56.65, Walsh was fourth in 56.87, Bruen seventh in 58.00 and Dwyer eighth in 58.19. Gold was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.46, Donovan third in 1:03.54, and Slislo seventh in 1:06.55. Donovan also placed fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.87, followed by Noelle Homan in sixth at 2:22.22, Slislo in seventh at 2:27.23 and McGerald in eighth at 2:31.34.
In the 200 butterfly, Fried was second in 2:00.87, Mason fourth in 2:06.86 and Caponiti sixth in 2:09.11. In the 100 butterfly, Lomonosov placed sixth in 57.06, Brandenburg seventh in 57.30 and Gold eighth in 57.74.
In the 400 individual medley, Fried was second in 4:22.98, Homan seventh in 4:35.86 and Mason eighth in 4:38.82. In the 500 freestyle, Karr was fifth in 5:08.72 and Davis sixth in 5:17.39.
In diving, Calista Fasser placed second in the 1-meter with 239.48 points and fourth in the 3-meter finals with 220.35. Kate Mundorf was fifth in the 1-meter with 220.35 and sixth in the 3-meter with 216.53. Annie Dockx placed seventh in the 1-meter with 210.15 and fifth in the 3-meter with 216.60. Simone Abbasi was eighth in both events, scoring 164.40 in the 1-meter and 175.65 in the 3-meter.
Loyola returns to the Mangione Pool at the Fitness & Aquatic Center for its next competition when it hosts Richmond on Friday, November 7, at 1 p.m.
