ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Senna Ohlsson became the first Loyola University Maryland track and field student-athlete to win an indoor or outdoor individual championship on Sunday, holding off the field to win the 800 meters title at the 2019 Patriot League Indoor Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Ohlsson was fourth midway through the race, but she took the lead by the 600-meter mark before holding off the U.S. Military Academy's Haley Watson in the final 200. The Loyola sophomore finished in 2:11.25, an ECAC Championships qualifying time and the No. 4 indoor time in Greyhounds history, while Watson was just behind in 2:11.67.
Ohlsson's title is the first first-place finish for a Loyola athlete or relay team at the Patriot League Track and Field Championships since the Greyhounds joined the conference in 2013-14.
Led by Ohlsson's title, a second-place finish by the 4x800-meter relay team on Saturday night and a fourth-place finish Sunday by the 4x400-meter relay, the Greyhounds took seventh with 22 place, matching its best finish at the Championships which was previously recorded last season.
Heather Merrifield,
Molly Smith, Ohlsson and
Courtney Kenny ran a season-best time of 3:50.47 in the 4x400-meter relay to finish fourth. The time qualified Loyola for the ECAC Championships in the event and is No. 3 all-time at Loyola.
Kenny also scored in the 400 meters, running the second-best indoor time of her collegiate career, 58.13, to finish seventh with the No. 4 time in school history.
Kayleigh Caggiano scored in the 1,000 meters, taking seventh in 2:56.09, an ECAC Championships qualifying time that is seventh in school history.
In addition to Ohlsson's winning run in the 800,
MaryEllen Woods was 10
th in the event in 2:15.21, the No. 9 time in Loyola history.
Eve Schoenberg took 16
th (2:20.49),
Gabrielle Silvestri was 17
th (2:20.52) and
Kate Ragone finished 18
th (2:21.95).
Smith logged a ninth-place finish in the 400 meters, running 58.60, and
Tara Ryan was 16
th in the 1,000 meters in 3:02.34.
Courtney Wallace finished 17
th in the mile run, clocking a time of 5:26.80, while
Christina Daniels (10:27.80) and
Mary Sutton (10:29.24) were 21
st and 22
nd in the 3,000 meters, respectively.
The Greyhounds' distance-medley relay team of Woods,
Maria Jaeckel,
Carly Spinnler and
Audrey O'Neill took ninth in the event in 12:28.00.
