BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won their respective team races at the Thomas Murphy Invitational, setting a total of nine pool and 15 meet records in the process.
The men's team scored 3,635 points to win the team event. UMBC was second with 2,380, while Towson and Mount St. Mary's were third (2,154) and fourth (587), respectively.
Loyola's women finished with 3,365 points for first place, besting Towson (2,809), UMBC (2,178) and Mount St. Mary's (543).
Luke Dwyer,
Caleb Kelly and
Alex Plavoukos were named Co-Male Swimmers of the Meet, while Towson's Martina Ciriesi was the Female Swimmer of the Meet. UMBC's Isaac Poole and Towson's Shannon Parrau were the Male and Female Divers of the Meet.
Loyola
Henry Mueller was named the recipient of the 2024 Thomas Murphy Endowed Scholarship at the meet, as well.
The Greyhounds closed the meet with a pair of relay wins and victories in seven individual events on Sunday evening.
Joe Hayburn and Kelly had the top individual swims of the day, taking down the Mangione Aquatic Center and Thomas Murphy Invitational records in the 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle, respectively. Haybrun touched the wall in 1:44.26 and now owns the pool records in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes. Kelly swam 44.13 in the preliminaries of the 100 freestyle to regain the record he held back in 2022.
The men's team also set a pair of pool and meet records in relays.
The Greyhounds' 200-yard freestyle relay team –
Brennan Coyle,
Patrick Hayburn,
Joe Hayburn and Kelly – won in 1:20.43 to set the two records, and 400-yard freestyle relay also set new pool and meet standards. Coyle,
Patrick Hayburn, Mueller and Kelly went 2:57.31 to take almost a half-second off the 2:57.80 put down by last year's winning relay at the meet.
Avery Stimmel set a meet record in the preliminary round of the women's 100 freestyle, swimming 50.46, and Lily Mad broke the meet mark in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.60).
Loyola's men had a pair of one-two-three finishes on Sunday, taking the top three spots in the 100 freestyle and 200 breaststroke. The Greyhounds had four finishers within the top five two other races, the men's 1,650 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Kelly, Coyle and
Patrick Hayburn swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle, finishing within 53-hundredths of a second of each other. Kelly out-touched Coyle 44.58 to 44.78, and Hayburn was right behind in 45.11.
Michael Gozdan went under two minutes in the 200 breaststroke, swimming 1:59.56 to win the race while
Zach Eisenmann was second (2:01.83) and
Michael Venit third (2:01.90).
Plavoukos led four Loyola swimmers in the top five of the 1,650 freestyle, winning in 15:41.87.
Matthew Hughes took third in 15:55.82,
Kiernan Leary was fourth (15:56.14), and
Jonah Goodman finished fifth (16:06.32).
Mueller,
JD Moyer and
Sam Voss followed
Joe Hayburn in the 100 backstroke with top-five finishes. Mueller was third in 1:47.65, while Moyer took fourth (1:48.90) and Voss was fifth (1:50.64).
Stimmel,
Lily Mead and
Riley Fried all won individual events for the Loyola women on Sunday. Stimmel, Moser,
Haley Robinson and
Charley Tulio also had a victory in 3:23.67 to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Stimmel was the fastest in the 100 frestyle, swimming 50.70 to lead a one-two finish for the Greyhounds;
Fay Moser finished second (51.36), and Tulio got into the top five with a fifth-place touch (51.59).
Fried won an event for the second night in a row, touching the wall first in the 200 butterfly (2:04.14).
Julia Mason was fifth in the event in 2:06.81.
Mead won her second event in as many nights, too, taking first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.60.
Noelle Hoffman was fourth in the event in 2:22.17.
CC Leoni led a three-four-five finish for the Loyola women in the 1,650 freestyle, taking third in 17:15.68.
Faith Karr came in fourth (17:19.37), and
Ellie Davis was fifth (17:36.46).
Lauren Lane was a top-five finisher for the Greyhounds women in the 200 backstroke, going 2:03.14 for fourth place.
Dwyer, Henry Hearn and
Cameron Shinnick were all in the top five for the Greyhounds men in the 200 butterfly. Dwyer was second (1:48.08), Hearn finished fourth (1:48.95), and Shinnick took fifth (1:49.70).
Two divers had top-five finishes for the Greyhounds on Sunday.
Sam Hersick was fourth in the men's 1-meter event with 271.40 points, and
Cali Fasser finished fifth in the women's 3-meter event with 225.55 points.
